The handle is a dog. A proper, beautifully modeled hound, arching his back to form the grip with the easy confidence of an animal who has always known his purpose. The body of the pitcher carries an embossed hunting scene — horses, riders, hounds in full cry — wrapped around the exterior in the Rockingham tradition that has been delighting English and American pottery collectors since the early 19th century.
This style of hunting pitcher has a long and distinguished pedigree. The great Harker Rockingham Pottery in East Liverpool, Ohio made them famous in America in the 1840s and 1850s, and the tradition has never really stopped — because the combination of an animated handle and a narrative relief scene is simply irresistible. This particular example was imported by Harvest Goods Inc. of Minnesota, who brought high-quality artisan ceramics from the Far East in the 1980s and 1990s. The craftsmanship is excellent — the embossed hunting scene is crisp, there is delicate hand painting throughout, and the high-shine glaze inside and out gives it a richness that elevates it well above a decorative novelty.
Original Harvest Goods Inc. sticker still intact on the base. Holds 40 oz to the fill line — genuinely useful as a pitcher or a vase for tall stems.
A wonderful gift for a hunter, an equestrian enthusiast, a ceramics collector, or anyone who appreciates a piece with genuine character and a long tradition behind it.
